What do I need to get started with online lessons?

We test your wifi in our consultations before you make a commitment and I go through all the tech needs with you so you can be ready to go at the first lesson. I use Zoom for all my lessons as it's got the best audio quality. I play the focused exercises and record my side of the lesson so you have a clean recording of the exercises and warmups.

Are online singing sessions as effective as in-person?
If you're a self-starter and you want to actively engage with learning to singing or accessing your voice, online lessons are great. As for their efficacy, as long as you have a good internet connection and a good headset and microphone, we're going to be fine. We're all different. Some of us need to get out of the house or want to go to a different place for sessions. Others live in places where there are no high quality voice educators. And then there are the busy people with family, work, or other social pressures.
What if my internet service is slow?
If you sign up for lessons and - once we start a session - your service is slow on the odd day, I never charge for technical failures. If you have a slow connection in general, either in-person or phone lessons could work best.
What exactly do your singing sessions look like?
We do breath work, allowing you to connect with your body. Physical warmups do the same thing to help release tension. We also talk, an important way of warming up and checking in with your voice. Then we do some voice explorations - exercises or vocalising through your range. I also talk about technique and emotional connection, getting feedback from you on what we're doing. It can be an exhilarating process, if not moving, at times. We also look at a song that you want to sing. I leave picking songs up to you unless there's something that I think will help push you in the direction you want to go.
How can I verify you know what you're doing?
You can check the reviews on the Rachel Austin Voice Facebook page. If you'd like, I can also put you in touch with a current or former student via my Facebook page.
What if I'm too old?
This is the best time to start, right when you think you're past starting. I've worked with people in their 70s at voice work - and they've actually found it good overall for their breath control and energy levels!
How do I pay for lessons?
I use Square for invoicing all my students, which allows you to pay online, by check, or by swiping a card.
What if I'm tone deaf or super self conscious?
Online sessions are actually great for people who feel self-conscious. You do it at home at a time that's good for you. If you think your tone deaf - huzzah! - come along. I've taught folks what though they were tone deaf to sing.
Any hidden terms and conditions?
I operate my sessions the way most voice and music studios do: I ask for 24 hours' notice to skip a lesson due (up to 4 times per year), 30 days notice via email that you're suspending lessons.
